Dinesh Gourisetty’s political journey is a testament to perseverance and represents a significant milestone for multicultural representation in Australian politics.
Inspired by former Prime Minister John Howard’s policies that supported immigrant success, Gourisetty began his political journey in 2006.
Rather than offering passive support, he actively volunteered for the Liberal Party, dedicating six years to grassroots campaigning before becoming a formal party member.
Gourisetty’s political career included several notable campaigns:
Although he did not win these elections, he gained something arguably more valuable — a reputation as a tenacious organizer and an emerging voice for multicultural communities.
His political journey was marked by significant adversity. While campaigning in diverse suburbs, Gourisetty faced racist taunts, physical intimidation, and systemic exclusion.
Colleagues recalled instances of volunteers being targeted, including threatening phone calls and even physical harassment, such as stones being thrown.
In 2020, Gourisetty was elected Chair of the Liberal Party's Western Metropolitan Regional Conference, becoming the highest-ranking Liberal Party official in Melbourne’s west.. His most audacious move came in 2021 when he contested the Victorian Liberal Party's state presidency – becoming the first Indian-Australian to seriously challenge for the top internal party position.
Gourisetty's approach to politics transcends traditional boundaries. He represents a new model of political engagement – one that prioritizes community service, cultural understanding, and persistent advocacy over personal political gain.
His remarkable resilience in the face of systemic challenges has not only opened doors for future multicultural political leaders but also reshaped conversations about representation and inclusivity in Australian politics.
